September 2016

Colourful greetings to everyone this Spring season.

There's usually a wave of excitement and renewed energy in September. In that spirit, we have started this month with a bang also, and we continue to push forward and deliver on our #LastingLegacy strategy.

As we end off the heritage month, let us remember to support our young learners at schools. Grade 9s across South African schools will be submitting their Grade 10 subject choices this week, let us encourage them to make the right subject choices as these will affect their career choices going forward. Let us also support those hardworking Matriculants as they prepare for their final exams, and encourage them to give of their best.

Happy Heritage month.

Kind Regards
Zandile Skosana

1 Fasset's Annual General Meeting and Thank You Function

"You are the next big thing!" - this statement adorns the cover of the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority's (Fasset) Annual Integrated Report 2015 - 2016, and encompasses a message of hope, reward for hard work, and the inevitable result of focusing on skills development.

At the Seta's Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Thank You function, which was held on the 15th of September 2016 at La Toscana, Montecasino, one consistent theme wound its way through the festive proceedings - leave a lasting legacy. Putting aside the quiet, reserved and desk bound connotations of the word "accountant"; Fasset once again proved it is vibrant, alive and ready to tackle South Africa's skills development challenges. Attendees of the AGM and Thank You Function were treated to a scrumptious breakfast, a distinctly African atmosphere, a polished hostess, (Patricia Stock), insightful speeches and a breath-taking, high energy musical production by the Mahuma Group. We would like to thank all stakeholders for celebrating our successes with us.

Fasset's Incentives Update 2016

Fasset has had a mid-year strategy change. This will impact on the discretionary funding available to Fasset stakeholders. Detailed information about the changes will be provided at our Incentives Update on the 12-14 October 2016.

To ensure that firms enjoy the benefits of being members of the Seta, please attend the 2016/2017 Incentives Update. These sessions will also provide stakeholders with information on Fasset's revised strategy #LastingLegacy, which is in line with the 2012 funding regulations, as well as the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training. Fasset management will facilitate this workshop and will be available for questions regarding the 2016/2017 benefits.

The workshops will be morning sessions, running from 08h30-12h00 (registration from 08h30 to 09h00) in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. Please note that the Cape Town event is scheduled to start at 09h30 to accommodate stakeholders who will be travelling from other regions. To register your attendance online, please Click here.

Inter-SETA Transfers

Fasset has an obligation to ensure that companies that are transferring into Fasset actually belong in the sector. Of late, Fasset has received many Inter-SETA Transfer (IST) applications for organisations that do not belong in the Fasset sector. Many of these organisations want to take advantage of the benefits that Fasset provides to its members. In the interests of being accountable to our stakeholders and being accountable for public funds, Fasset does scrutinise the IST applications and has turned down those that do not fit squarely into the Fasset sector.

Lifelong Learning calendar of events

Lifelong Learning (LL) events remain a flagship offering under Fasset's new strategy; and these events are always well-supported. The course content for each of the topics we offer is designed to suit both Finance and Non-Finance professionals in our sector; and aims to enable our stakeholders to keep their professional skills current.

We have successfully hosted the 2016 Compliance to Changes in Legislation Update workshop from 22 August 2016 to 09 September 2016. We would like to thank all stakeholders who have attended this training and encourage that you download your certificate of attendance on the website.

We will be running a Webinar on the 29th September 2016 from 09h00 to 11h00, to accommodate the delegates who could not attend the sessions. To participate in the webinar please click here.

Learner Professional Development
Fasset has introduced the Learner Professional Development initiative which runs similarly to Lifelong Learning but is aimed at newly appointed graduates and learners employed in the sector. This intervention provides learners with the entry level soft skills necessary to be competent in the occupation chosen. Learners who receive the Learner Employment Grant will be required to attend at least 3 Learner Professional Development (LPD) courses per annum (1 course in the 2016/17 FY).

Check out the upcoming Learner Professional Development seminars for the month of November in our Events Calendar. Diarise the events that are most relevant to you and make your booking today to reserve your seat.

We look forward to hosting you at these seminars where best practice in our sector is shared.
